President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, received United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka at his office in downtown Beirut, in the presence of Political Adviser Carol Zouein. They discussed the situation in Lebanon and developments in Gaza and the wider region.
Makhzoumi said the discussion addressed the latest developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. He emphasized the United Nations’ role, especially on the humanitarian front, which is critically important at this stage to lift the blockade on the Strip, urgently ensure that besieged residents receive essential supplies of food, medicine, and water, and provide hospitals with the resources they need to accommodate the wounded and sick. He renewed his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities by all parties and for the launch of a political process to establish a Palestinian state based on the two-state solution proposed under the Arab Peace Initiative at the 2002 Beirut Summit.
Makhzoumi also renewed his call to secure the Lebanese-Israeli border in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and to keep Lebanon out of any looming conflict or war. He rejected the creation of new arrangements, such as the so-called “rules of engagement,” which would take Lebanon outside the framework of its Constitution and the resolutions of international legitimacy.
He stressed the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the South, particularly during this sensitive period, noting that the force has long contributed to maintaining peace and providing support in coordination and cooperation with the Lebanese Army, in addition to playing an effective role in monitoring the implementation of relevant international resolutions.
