President of the National Dialogue Party and MP Fouad Makhzoumi visited Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian at Dar Al-Fatwa, accompanied by the party’s Political Bureau Chief and former Ambassador, Dr. Bassam Naamani; Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Duraid Oueidat; Administrative Director Mr. Talal Al-Qaisi; and member of the Supreme Islamic Sharia Council, Kamel Dimyati. They discussed the general situation in Lebanon and the region.
Following the meeting, Makhzoumi said that he and His Eminence had reviewed the latest local and regional developments. He stressed that the top priority today is the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, in all its provisions, to halt attacks against Lebanon. He added that the government must begin implementing the resolution and support the Lebanese Army, which is doing its utmost to enforce it.
Makhzoumi noted that the international community links assistance for Lebanon’s reconstruction to the implementation of Resolution 1701, as well as the implementation of reforms. In this regard, he said: “In the joint parliamentary committees, we passed the law lifting banking secrecy, and we hope it will also be approved during Thursday’s plenary session, particularly in light of the Lebanese delegation’s meetings with officials from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.”
He emphasized the need to launch reconstruction efforts so that residents can return to their villages, while also working to attract investment again and restore the country’s full sovereignty.
Regarding the municipal elections, Makhzoumi said that all political forces must keep politics out of the electoral process. He called on the people of Beirut to reach a consensus on a list that includes all communities and preserves the Muslim-Christian parity, thereby safeguarding the unity of Lebanon and its capital, which represents the entire country.
