President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, received U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson at his office in downtown Beirut, in the presence of Political Adviser Carol Zouein. The Ambassador was accompanied by Political Adviser David Lewis. The introductory meeting addressed the situation in Lebanon and the region, particularly developments in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Following the meeting, Makhzoumi said the visit was an opportunity to get acquainted and congratulate Ambassador Johnson on assuming her new duties in Beirut. He thanked the United States for its continued support for Lebanon and its people under all circumstances.

Makhzoumi reiterated that the difficult circumstances facing the Lebanese people require the urgent election of a President of the Republic and the formation of an effective government capable of embarking on a serious reform process. He praised the efforts of the Quintet Committee and its earnest, sustained efforts to bring the presidential vacuum to an end at this pivotal moment in Lebanon’s and the region’s history.

Makhzoumi stressed the need to shield Lebanon from the risk of being drawn into any war and to prevent the country from being dragged into regional conflicts. He emphasized the importance of fully implementing all provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and assigning the Lebanese Army responsibility for protecting and securing the borders. He also expressed confidence that the United States would continue supporting Lebanon, particularly its military institutions, during this delicate stage in the region’s history.
