A delegation representing opposition forces, comprising MPs Fouad Makhzoumi, Michel Moawad, Salim Sayegh, and Michel Douaihy, met with the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. They discussed the general situation in Lebanon and the region, as well as the latest developments regarding the war in Lebanon.
During the meeting, the participants stressed the need to put an end to the war and implement international resolutions, foremost among them UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in all its provisions, including Resolutions 1559 and 1680. They also emphasized the need to uphold the Taif Agreement, which serves as the constitutional reference framework for these international resolutions, all of which are intended to advance the principle of state authority and sovereignty.
They stressed that the priority today is to restore sovereign decision-making, ensure that the state has a monopoly on weapons and strategic decision-making, and deploy the Lebanese Army along the entire Blue Line and along all of Lebanon’s borders.
The MPs also emphasized the urgent need to elect a President of the Republic and not to link the presidential election to any other issue. They explained that ending the war in Lebanon and restoring security and stability require legitimate constitutional authorities, from a President of the Republic to a government that enjoys the confidence of Parliament, as well as effective and productive state institutions.
