A delegation from the Beirut Dialogue Forum, headed by MP Fouad Makhzoumi, visited the Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic, His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, at Dar Al-Fatwa.
Following the meeting, MP Makhzoumi stated that the Forum’s visit aimed to discuss the latest developments in the country, coinciding with the parliamentary session to question the government at the Lebanese Parliament. He added: “Today, we listened to Grand Mufti Derian’s assessment of the current situation, particularly in light of the delicate circumstances Lebanon is facing. We also briefed His Eminence on his recent visit to Syria.”
Makhzoumi affirmed that the Beirut Dialogue Forum stands alongside Dar Al-Fatwa and supports Grand Mufti Derian in fulfilling the leadership role required of him, stressing that His Eminence’s statements represent the Forum’s position.
Regarding the American proposal presented to the government, Makhzoumi stressed that it aims to ensure the effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in all its provisions. He noted that one party in Lebanon is still assessing the current phase to determine whether or not it will implement Resolution 1701. He also recalled that the previous government, which effectively represented Hezbollah, agreed in November 2024 to the ceasefire agreement and to the implementation of Resolution 1701.
Makhzoumi expressed hope that positive statements would be made in Parliament regarding the implementation of the resolution and the pursuit of reforms. He stressed that there was no reason to obstruct the work of the current government, which represents the various political forces, including Hezbollah.
He concluded by stating that the Lebanese Army is carrying out its duties to the fullest, but that the decision and commitment to implement Resolution 1701 rest with the government. He expressed hope that the government would fulfil its responsibilities and move swiftly to implement the resolution before it is too late.
