President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, visited Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian at his residence, accompanied by Samer Al-Safah, Director General of the Makhzoumi Foundation. They discussed matters concerning Dar al-Fatwa and the general situation in the country.
Following the meeting, Makhzoumi said that the visit was to extend his congratulations to His Eminence on the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, expressing his hope that it would return to the Lebanese people with blessings. He noted that Ramadan is a month of tolerance and solidarity, stressing the importance of working together.
He emphasized the need to capitalize on regional developments at the domestic level to find a way out of the severe crisis facing the country. He pointed out that the US dollar had surpassed the 100,000 Lebanese pound mark, while the Lebanese pound had lost its value. Meanwhile, nearly a year after the preliminary agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), no reforms had been implemented.
Makhzoumi praised Saudi Arabia’s concern for Lebanon, recalling the five diplomatic frameworks that had protected the country during the preceding period. He highlighted, in particular, the initiative conveyed to Lebanon through the State of Kuwait, under which Saudi Arabia and its partners had expressed their readiness to help, while emphasizing certain fundamental principles and conditions that Lebanon must respect. He noted that assistance to Lebanon was no longer possible if the country continued to interfere beyond its borders.
Makhzoumi also recalled his visit to Stockholm with a parliamentary delegation representing 40 MPs to meet with European Union officials, noting the positive response the delegation received. He added, “We will be visiting Brussels to make our voices heard once again by the European Union.”
He said he had discussed the economic situation with His Eminence, reaffirming his support for Dar al-Fatwa and the Zakat Fund. He stressed the need to ease the burdens borne by Lebanese citizens and expressed optimism about the possibility of working together to reach a solution in the coming period.
