President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, visited Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian at his residence, accompanied by Samer Al-Safah, Director General of the Makhzoumi Foundation. They discussed matters concerning Dar al-Fatwa and the general situation in the country.
Following the meeting, Makhzoumi said that the visit was intended to inquire about His Eminence’s health. He praised the Grand Mufti’s role in coordinating with other religious authorities and commended his wisdom, which he said they were counting on during this pivotal stage in Lebanon’s history. He stressed the need to expedite the election of a president of the republic, paving the way for signing an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and securing the funding allocated to Lebanon under such an agreement.
Regarding the economic situation, the uncontrolled fluctuations in the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Lebanese pound, and the collapse unfolding across various sectors, Makhzoumi stressed the need to unite efforts to elect a president, form an effective government, and sign an agreement with the IMF in order to restore confidence in the country and prevent it from falling into a vacuum.
He noted that the international community remained committed to supporting and assisting Lebanon, as demonstrated by the agreement signed to support the country’s security institutions. He also pointed to signs of renewed awareness within the existing political establishment, expressing hope that all constitutional deadlines and requirements would be met to prevent the country from descending into a political vacuum.
