President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, received United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis at his office in downtown Beirut, in the presence of Political Adviser Dr. Carol Zouein. They discussed the situation in Lebanon and the region.

Following the meeting, Makhzoumi said that the discussion focused on the explosion—the crime that struck the Beirut Port. He thanked the United Nations and the international community at large for the assistance provided to those affected in devastated Beirut. He reiterated the need to establish a parliamentary investigative committee that would draw on the expertise of an international investigative commission and the necessary technology lacking within the Lebanese judiciary to identify those responsible for this catastrophe.

Makhzoumi stated that Lebanon and the Lebanese people were counting on the United Nations to support the October 17 Revolution and the change they aspire to achieve, particularly following the crime of the port explosion and the catastrophe that befell Beirut and most of its residents.

He commended the support the United Nations provides to Lebanon, particularly through the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which helps maintain security in the south. He expressed hope that support would be given to renewing UNIFIL’s mandate and upholding Security Council Resolution 1701.

Makhzoumi stressed that any United Nations-sponsored initiative to address Lebanon’s economic, financial, and living-condition crises would make a meaningful difference in the country and help support Beirut’s reconstruction.
