President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, accompanied by Political Adviser Carol Zouein, visited the Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rai, at the patriarchal headquarters in Bkerke. They discussed the general situation in Lebanon.
Following the meeting, Makhzoumi said he had discussed the latest local developments with His Beatitude, with a particular focus on the presidential elections. He noted that opposition forces were working to agree on a presidential candidate and elect a president as soon as possible. He pointed out that the quorum had been lost during the second round of voting in all 11 sessions held to elect a president of the republic.
Makhzoumi noted that the international community was waiting for Lebanon to elect a president, form an effective government, implement reforms, and conclude an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He stressed that Lebanon needed to keep pace with developments in the region amid the settlements currently taking place.
Makhzoumi said he had briefed His Beatitude on the meetings he had held with the parliamentary delegation during its visits to Western capitals. He noted that the delegation would visit Paris to promote the reforms that Lebanon needs to implement in order to secure Arab and international support, revive the collapsing economy, attract investment once again, and put the country back on the path to recovery and overcoming its crises.
