President of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, thanked the International Support Group for Lebanon for the conference held in Paris to help Lebanon address its escalating economic crisis and for its support of the Lebanese people’s uprising against corruption.
Makhzoumi thanked the group for its attention to Lebanon and for adopting a plan that holds Lebanese officials accountable by making assistance conditional on the formation of a clean government free from corrupt individuals. He also welcomed the decision not to tie international aid to specific individuals, viewing this as an indication that the international community was responding to the demands of the Lebanese public, who had taken to the streets for more than 50 days seeking a national rescue government composed of specialists and experts, independent of the corrupt political class.
Makhzoumi said: “We would particularly like to thank France, represented by President Emmanuel Macron, for his efforts in hosting this conference and his commitment to supporting Lebanon. This includes insisting that aid should not be tied to the individual of any prime minister-designate, but rather to a rescue plan that combats corruption and waste and implements swift and effective reform measures.
“This is especially important given that the donor countries’ conference accurately identified the true nature of Lebanon’s financial and economic crisis and successfully directed attention toward effective solutions and the necessary support through significant decisions.”
